Honeywell and Chemours Announce New Manufacturing Plants for HFO 1234yf

The two largest U.S. producers of HFO 1234yf, Honeywell and Chemours, are both increasing manufacturing capacity of this eco-friendly replacement for R-134a. Airgas Refrigerants stocks HFO-1234yf.

Honeywell announced the opening of its $300 million Solstice® 1234yf plant in Geismar, La., May 12, 2017. The company’s press release states that Honeywell has created a central hub in Louisiana to manufacture its full portfolio of next-generation Solstice products, which includes Solstice yf.

“Solstice yf is an award-winning product that was developed by the company’s team of scientists to meet the needs of the automotive industry to replace R-134a, the most widely used auto refrigerant,” reads the press release. “Solstice yf has a global-warming-potential (GWP) of less than 1, which is lower than carbon dioxide and 99.9 percent lower than R-134a, which has a GWP of 1300. R-134a is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), which many governments and industries have been looking at phasing out since the early 2000s.”

According to Honeywell, more than 20 million cars today use Solstice yf, with projections of more than 40 million using it by the end of 2017. Global adoption of this refrigerant will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of permanently removing more than 30 million cars from the road.

Automotive News  reported Honeywell Vice President Ken Gayer’s comments to WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge: “Half the cars manufactured in the U.S. today are using this product and that will convert to 100 percent by 2021.” Those numbers refer to HFO-1234yf, not only the Solstice brand.

In February, Chemours announced that it broke ground on its new Opteon HFO-1234yf facility at its Corpus Christi Plant in Ingleside, Texas. Chemours states that this facility will triple its “world-leading capacity for its HFO-1234yf-based-products, which are low global warming potential (GWP) and better for the environment.” Chemours states that more than 50 million cars could carry HFO-1234yf by the end of 2017.

The Chemours announcement reveals that the new facility “will use an innovative, patented process to manufacture Opteon YF, Chemours’ HFO-1234yf mobile refrigerant product used in automotive air conditioning, and Opteon refrigerant blends which are used across a range of applications.”

Airgas Refrigerants will continue to carry an expanding line of HFO refrigerants as they become available.
